I often feel that this is how characters develop: they become more themselves and less controlled by the author the more that the author writes. But Gerta was insistent, constantly interrupting my thoughts the way I’m sure she often pestered her family.” I, in particular, love this! I love how Nielsen refers to Gerta as a character somewhat outside of her control.
The timing was too tight, I was already contracted for a different trilogy, and, as was pointed out to me more than once, I wasn’t a historical writer. In the last few pages of A Night Divided, she admits, “There was nothing logical about my decision to write this book. Even while writing for a younger age group, she refrains from being condescending or using what I would call ‘baby talk.’ Nielsen writes because she wants to, and is also humble about her work. Nielsen is particularly skilled at creating a riveting story with likeable characters (but still plenty of facts and historically accurate settings) that children between the ages of eight and twelve won’t be able to put down. However, A Night Divided hardly reads like a textbook rather, more like a thriller. A Night Divided, like many recently published middle-grade and young adult novels, is written in the first person, from the main character’s viewpoint, and is also, as you may have guessed, of the historical fiction genre.
